Day 35 (February 4, 2010)

Today I did something very Baltimore.

A big snow storm is forecast. As is customary, news crews broadcast live from the grocery stores the night before a storm. People are always buying three things in preparation for the storm: Bread, Milk, and Toilet Paper.

I get the bread part. You need to have it in case the power goes out. No cooking is required and you can't store it too far ahead.

I get the milk part. Again, it goes bad and, especially if you have kids, you'll want to have it.

Then there's the toilet paper thing. Yes, you surely don't want to run out. But, it's not like it goes bad or is rationed at the store one roll at a time. It's not hard to keep a few days worth of rolls ahead in the house.

Yet, every time there is a storm forecast in the Baltimore area there's a run on bread, milk, and toilet paper.

So, I was in Walmart today getting some supplies from church. As I was going down the aisle, I got swept up in the frenzy of the bread/milk/toilet paper crowd. I knew I had plenty of bread at home. I knew our milk supply was good.

But then I started thinking about the toilet paper and couldn't remember exactly how many rolls we had in stock. Though I was fairly certain we had more than enough, I said to myself, "There's a storm coming so I'd better get some just in case." I pushed through the crowd and got my 24 "double" rolls.

No, there's not enough room for them on the closet shelf because we already had an ample supply in the house.

I think I may have lived in this town one storm too long.

Thanks for reading,
